Home-Use Photobiomodulation Devices and its therapeutic efficacy

If you are considering purchasing one of our home-use photobiomodulation (PBM) devices, a more recent literature review from the the Department of Medical Neurobiology, Institute for Research in Military Medicine, Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel (Gavish and Houreld, 2019) may be of reference. Notably, factors such as the below were relevant to the therapeutic efficacy of the PBM therapy of home-use devices;


The property of light that enables the emitted photons to avoid complete scattering when initially penetrating the body, thereby reaching great depth in the tissue.

Irradiance and fluence ranges (14-55 mW//cm2 and 4-50J/cm2).


Wherein there should be a pulsing protocol in device use. Here, it is widely accepted that by using pulsed photons, accumulative tissue heating is avoided during the pulse OFF time. This enables an added safety value of low-frequency pulsing when high-powered and regular use applications may result in negative affects.


Whether the home-use PBM device, as per industrial standards, is an NIR wavelength (600-900nm wavelength, Near Infrared Rays with frequencies from 214 to 430 THz and wavelengths from 0.75 to 1.4 microns) OR MIR (Mid Infrared Rays with frequencies from 37 tp 214 THz and wavelengths from 1.4 to 8 microns) OR, FIR (Far Infrared Rays with frequencies from 300 GHz to 37THz and wavelengths from 8 to 1000 micron).


Whether the FIR/NIR PBM device is used in accordance with the World Association for Laser Therapy: Recommended Treatment Doses for Low-Level Laser Therapy. For example, the suggested NIR dose by the WALT (2010) being 780-860 nm lasers: 50-500mW, minimal effective dose 4J/point, in the case of a beneficial outcome of the studies in relation to pain reduction.

It depends completely upon the area being treated and the distance of treatment.

In general, all that is needed is usually 10-20 minutes.

Eye protection is not required or necessary.However, we don’t recommend looking directly at the LEDs because it can sometimes be uncomfortable. With that said, your eyes typically become accustomed to the light and it is then OK to open your eyes, as long as you aren’t feeling discomfort.

I can’t see them. Near infrared (NIR) light is actually not visible to the naked human eye.

It is outside of the visual spectrum, and as a result, it cannot be seen. However, there is a very slight glow that comes from the LEDs, especially in dark conditions, so if you are concerned the NIR LEDs are really not working, you can test them that way.

Red and near infrared light therapy has been proven in thousands of clinical studies and peer reviewed clinical trials to be not only safe but also effective. However, if you use medications such as Tetracycline, Digoxin,Retin A, and/or other photo sensitizing drugs, we recommend consulting with your doctor or health care provider before using the device.

Of course, just make sure that the area that you’re treating is completely exposed.
